Set Up Your Payment Processor

You must set up your payment processor before you can set a course price. Thinkific supports Paypal and Stripe natively. Both integrations have one-time payment options. If you want to set up subscriptions or payment plans, this is only available through Stripe.

Choose a Course Price

Choosing the pricing for your course can be tricky. You need to strike a delicate balance in finding a price that people are willing to pay, without devaluing the work you’ve put in and the perceived worth of your content.

Luckily, we have excellent resources on how to price your online course:

Course Pricing Options

1. Free

Courses set as ‘Free’ will be available for, well, free! All the student needs to do is create a user account with your site and they’ll be able to have access to the course content indefinitely without paying anything.

Free course pricing is intended for instructors offering forever-free content, or a free mini course as a lead magnet. If you’re looking to offer a free trial for a paid course, try our content-limited free preview or perhaps our Free Trial to Subscription price option below (not available on Free plans).

2. One-time payment

Setting a one-time price for your course means that the student will be charged a one-off fee for access to your course (in contrast to recurring payments such as subscriptions and payment plans).

Setting ‘Days to expiry’ for a one-time payment means that the student’s access to the course will automatically expire after the specified number of days. This is great for if you’re running a scheduled course or if you want to increase the potential for repeat signups for continuing access to the content.

3. Subscription payment

The subscription payment option allows you to take recurring payments for your course via Stripe. Subscriptions are based on months, but you have the flexibility to charge every month, every year, or anywhere in between!

The student’s billing date will be based on the day of the month that they sign up on. For example, if they sign up for a subscription that recurs every 3 months on January 15th, their next billing date will be April 15th.

You can also select to offer a Free Trial period of days or months prior to the subscription beginning. During this free trial for the course, all lessons will be available. As a best practice, you may want to utilize a Drip Schedule to prevent some lessons from being available. You can set the schedule for X Days after Registration.

Alternatively, you can also set that there is a custom initial payment required for the subscription similar to a non-refundable deposit.

*Note: You cannot apply a Free trial period and Custom first payment.

Subscriptions are ideal for longer courses and work great in conjunction with our drip schedule feature, which allows you to release content over time - maximizing the lifetime revenue from a student by encouraging them to stick around for more. (If you’re looking to run your entire Thinkific site as a subscription site, check out this article).

4. Payment plan

You can use payment plans to split the total price for your course out over several monthly payments via Stripe. Unlike subscriptions, payment plans have an end date. For example, if a student signs up for a three-month payment plan on January 15th, they’ll be charged on January 15th, February 15th, March 15th, and nothing beyond that.

Particularly for courses in a higher price range, payment plans are great for boosting sales by removing potential barriers for your students, such as a lack of available funds, uncertainty about whether the course is for them, etc. Full instructions for creating payments plans for your course and bundles can be found here.

5. Additional Pricing

You’re not limited to just one price per course! As part of the Pro plan and higher, you can display multiple additional pricing options on your course landing page, giving students the choice to pick the one that works best for them. More on additional pricing here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Change My Currency?

Yes! Changing your price currency can only be done through the Stripe Integration. See instructions HERE. PayPal is USD only by default, however if you connect a Stripe account, any changes made to the currency in the Stripe integration will be reflected on PayPal transactions as well. Note that we would not recommend changing currency after making your first sale, as Stripe does not allow users to make purchases in multiple currencies. This means that if a user paid for a course in USD and you changed your currency to CAD, they would need to create a new account in order to make the CAD purchase.

Can I Have Multiple Currencies?

Currency is applied site wide at this time. If you require multiple currencies, you can link your site with an external payment gateway that supports multiple currencies and utilize our Zapier Integration.

What's the Difference from Making Course Content Part of a Free Preview Versus a Free Trial Subscription Period?

A Free Trial period is specifically set up in the Subscription Payment option as described above. It will allow your students to access all of your course content for a specified period of time. Making specific course content (ie. Lessons) part of a Free Preview will allow your student to access that content indefinitely when enrolling in the Free Preview option of your course for free. See HERE for instructions.

What About Failed Payment Plans or Subscription Charges?

If a student’s payment ever fails, they will automatically lose access to the course content until a successful charge is made. Integrate with Stunning to automate your follow ups with these users, and prevent potential lost revenue!
