Now that you've created an additional page for your course site and added some eye-catching content to it (learn more on the Thinkific blog), you're going to want to set up the Page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) so you can stand out whenever your page is looked up on search engines like Google or Bing.
The goal for any website is to optimize the presentation of your page on:
- Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs)
- Other Social Networking Services
This article will focus on showing you how to add basic meta tags so your custom page looks great on search engine results pages. Once you learn how to add meta tags, you can then also add other meta tags
for social media optimization.
SEO for Custom Pages
Each time you create a custom page for your Thinkific course site, you should fill out the Page SEO section after the Edit Page section. There are a few basic meta tag fields that you can add to any custom page to improve its SEO:
The page title is the text you see in your browser tab when the page is open and the link text on a search engine results page. Any page title should be less than 40 characters long.
Title text is important to search engines and to the people you want to attract to your site. Think of it as the signpost people will use to get to you when they search.
The page description is the text you will see under the link text on the search engine results page. Any page description should be at most between 150 - 160 characters long.
Page descriptions are very important to people searching for you online, but not as important to search engines. You should be writing compelling copy in this field to convince people to visit your site.
Page keywords help search engines and other sites looking at your page figure out what its content is about. Separate each keywords by a comma in this field.
You should add keywords that relevant to what the page is specifically about to help others find that specific information on your course site faster. You don't need an exhaustive list of keywords in this field, 3 - 10 will do.
Other Meta Tags
You can add other meta tags in the Meta tags
field (see this article to learn more
). For example, you can make include an author tag by adding the following to this field:
<meta type="author" content="Thinkific">
That's it! Your new custom page now shines on search engine results pages (it might take a little while for search engines to reflect your changes, up to two or three weeks).
